It arrived but not as described
Different from nothing arriving, because the outcome is nearly always partial. A full refund is unlikely and asking for one is often what turns a workable resolution into a stalemate.
What to do in the first hour
- Document it before anything else. Once you have handled it, opened it or used it, whatever record you did not make is gone.
- Do not release the funds. Anything you were going to do next is worse after releasing.
- Message once, factually, saying what is wrong. Not what you think of it.
- Decide what outcome you actually want before the conversation, because you will be asked and a vague answer gets a vague result.
What outcomes are realistic

The check that changes the ask
Read the listing again before you decide what to ask for. A surprising share of these turn out to be a difference between what the listing said and what the buyer assumed it meant, and an arbitrator reads the listing, not the assumption.
Settling it directly with the vendor
Most of these are resolved between the two of you without a formal dispute, and that is usually the faster and better outcome. The important detail is that any agreement has to happen inside the order rather than around it.
An arrangement where you release the funds now and they sort it out afterwards is not an agreement, it is the end of the mechanism. A promise made outside escrow has nothing behind it, whoever makes it and however reasonable they have been so far.
When to stop negotiating and file
- When the replies stop. Silence is weighed against whoever produced it, and that works in your favour here.
- When you are being asked to release first. That is not a step toward resolution.
- When the window is about to close. Do not let it run out while being negotiated with.
- When the conversation turns to feedback. Threatening a rating, in either direction, is visible and reads as pressure.
What to put in the submission
Order reference and dates first, one sentence on what is wrong, one sentence naming the remedy you want, and the message thread pasted whole with nothing tidied out. Leaving in a message that makes you look slightly unreasonable is better than editing it, because an unedited thread reads as an unedited thread and that is worth more than the line you wanted to lose.
