Chapter 5 of 6 / the order has gone wrong
I am being asked to release the funds early
It arrives politely, usually with a reason that makes sense, and it is the one button on the order page that cannot be undone by anybody afterwards.
What you are actually being asked
To move the money from a state where two of three parties must agree, into the vendor account, permanently, before the thing you paid for has arrived. Every protection in the arrangement exists between those two states, and releasing skips all of it at once.
The reasons you will hear
| The reason | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| I need to clear the order for my accounting | An explanation attached to a request that benefits one side |
| It has already shipped, this is just a formality | It is not a formality. It is the whole mechanism |
| New buyers finalise first, it is our policy | At least honest if it was on the listing. If it appeared now, it is not a policy |
| I will refund you if anything is wrong | A promise outside escrow with nothing behind it |
| My account is being restricted | A reason to hurry attached to a reason to bypass |
Why the answer has to be flat
A rule with an exception requires you to decide whether this is the exception, and that decision is exactly what the pressure is aimed at. A rule with no exception asks nothing of you in the moment.
A vendor who is going to deliver loses nothing by waiting for the window. A vendor who is not gains everything from you clicking now. From where you sit those two look identical, and that is precisely why the answer is the same in both cases.
Refusing is not an accusation
A genuine vendor will not be surprised by a refusal, because they know exactly what the request looks like from your side. Being polite about it costs nothing. Changing your mind about it costs the order.
Finalise early as a listed condition
Some listings state it up front, sometimes with a discount attached. That is a different thing from being asked mid order, because you can decide with the information in front of you before any money moves. What you are buying with the discount is the removal of the only protection in the arrangement, so it is worth being clear that this is the trade rather than a box to tick.
If you already released
- There is no dispute to file. The mechanism ended when the funds moved.
- Messaging is all that is left, and it works about as often as you would expect.
- Do not send anything further. A follow up request to fix a problem with the first payment is the same approach repeating.
- Leave an accurate review afterwards, once it is over rather than during, which is the one thing you can still put back.
